See, exchangeph is an 'alias' of sorts for my 'real' account if you can call it that, ghmercado(at)rocketmail. Incidentally, I'm glad I have a rocketmail account, which is probably the rarest free email account around since after Yahoo bought it up a hundred years ago (more like 8 or 10 actually, my has the internet been around that long?. Anyway to the uninitiated Yahoo basically just took rocketmail's subscribers then subsequently took the service down, and now I just checked, it really is gone now. :(

At any rate the (super exciting - not) story is, I use the exchangeph alias (named after the one and only domain I own btw), the most, initially to serve as a way to communicate with people who joined up on my old site Cell Exchange, but as it went I used it for most everyone else as well. I initially got started on using it for (the excellent imho) Yahoo Calendar, and My Yahoo to keep track of NBA games. But the problem is, there was NO EMAIL for some odd reason. The rocketmail email account still worked alright, in fact I use it specifically for super important mail like those from domain hosts and such, however no go for exchangeph.

Until today that is, when almost as a lark, I sent a cry for help, and guess what? They answered!

<quote>
> We have received your Temporary Access
> Problem report. This is typically a
> transient error message. Clicking
> on the refresh button in your browser
> or signing out and back into your
> account will often resolve the issue.

> If the problem continues, please
> reply to this email. In order for
> us to proceed further, we
> will need to know the
> date and time of your
> last successful login before
> the error occurred. Suffice it to say 4 day download of the 3.9gb install files well worth it.

One thing though:

.. the resemblance Carl and Kerry Kittles is uncanny.

bye bye little one

Just finished playing around with the Fujitsu P7010 I was leant for review for a week and a half as I mentioned in my last post. I was determined to get everything back to the default spec like when I got it, so I reformatted and reinstalled everything using the recovery CD it came with. Let's see, I took a screenshot of the desktop meaning to show the Intel Wifi bubble showing that I was connected, and it says 6:30AM. I started breakfast around 7:30, so that's not bad for one OS (XP Home), the accompanying drivers (video, fingerprint recognition software, some utilities here and there, and the accompanying Norman anti-virus software .).

Without saying too much to give the article away (buy m|ph next month ok?!?!), and consequently earn the ire of my editors, I'd say I'll miss this little sucker basically because it allowed me all that freedom to work wherever and whenever I wanted. Not that I actually got a lot of work done - I've still to get used to the idea sitting around in a cafe with lots of people milling about, trying to concentrate on writing an article. Give me my quiet room at home anytime, and I'll write you up a storm. But at a cafe? Either I'm too distracted, or I'll need some more time to get used to it.

At any rate, the only thing other thing I can say here about it is that, well, I loved it, but am looking forward to giving it back because hell, I'm tired of lugging it around everyday! At only 1.3kg, about the size of a medium sized textbook, I've frankly little to complain about, but that's just the notebook. Siempre you've to put all sorts of stuff in there as well, like a PCMag copy (to read when idle), a crimper and extra LAN cable (I need for a client's networking job I'm doing), a shirt or two (I might need it if I get soaked in the rain and to help buffer any shock to the notebook), and an umbrella (heaven help me if I get it wet!).

Why bring it around it in the first place? Because NO WAY will I leave it at our empty unattended house even under lock and key. I'd probably rush back every few hours just to check on it.

Anyway, it's all set in the box that I got it in, ready to be delivered by myself (as instructed. At any rate, specs:

ibm thinkpad 600e, Pentium III 363mhz, 6gb HD, 128mb RAM, cdrom, pcmcia, earphone/mic, modem, 1 usb, 1 parallel, 1 serial, 1 ps2

i was never into laptops. nor gadgets for that matter. i remember being issued both in former employment which i often left neatly tucked away in my drawer, partly due to fact that either item was more expensive than my then car, partly because i found them bulky, partly because i felt i couldnt be bothered maintaining/using a desktop PC and a notebook at the same time, and partly because i did not see the point in bringing my work anywhere outside of where i was supposed to (the office). Not at office = not working. Seems logical.

however, the relentless 37.9° heat, occasional boredom at the house-office, and the availability of free hotspots around the city have changed this somewhat. Due to fortuitous offer above, i now imagine myself happily firing away at nearby rockwell mcdo, where i gather a signal from some nearby cafe spills over. FTPing/terminaling/photoshoping with glee, writing better, more complete articles, making fantastic websites, completing past projects, rubbing my chin slowly as I dream up of exciting internet ideas as I sip a refreshing beverage in a balmy commercial establishment's atmosphere. Ah, the promise of a fruitful, more fulfilled life beckons - or so the brochure I've made up in my mind says.

At any rate, we're still talking about a 6 year old notebook here, but at the price offered and the great condition it's in, I'm fairly convinced. After of course, a few necessary embellishments, namely a P1,650.00 PCMCIA WiFi G Adapter, a suitable RHEL, a bigger hard disk, possibly a new battery, one of those cheapo usb splitters, one of those cutesy usb mice, but most sought after upgrade of all, MORE RAM. The good news is, Thinkpads are a fairly popular brand, and RAM may just be a matter of searching around ABC Computers (the local standard Thinkpad repair place) and other similar establishments. The bad news is, how many memory slots does the 600e have, and if there's only one slot and I do find RAM, will I find RAM bigger than 128mb (the standard config for this model), and of course, how much will this all COST.

hmm..

Outside of the blurry parts however, the purchase is likely a go. I just read preceding paragraph and I thought to myself, that kind of info I mentioned: ie, what i need to buy, where to buy it, how much will it cost, what is it i dont know and what can I do to compromise, etc. means that after xx years of doing this, I think i know what im doing - buying an old clunker of a machine and making it suit my purposes. Besides, he's selling it real cheap.

Do I sound convinced or what? Fresh beverage in balmy commercial establishment atmosphere here I come.

this is by far..

the coolest thing ive seen on the net for months.

http://arje.net/rasterbator

thoughts on the national ID

after reading this.

My initial thoughts on the National ID border on some measure of disbelief, not in the fact that the gov't would consciously undertake such an audacious assault on the right to privacy at such magnitude, but that it would consciously undertake anything at all of any magnitude. Remember, this is a country where the nation's top criminals enjoy rights like any other. Erap continues to live amongst us, and parties heartily as well. Imelda and her children are not only private free citizens, they're elected top government officials. This is a country where the President's husband has the nerve to stay at the most expensive suite to watch a boxing match - even as he knows local journalists abound - even as he knows he doesn't have to be there - even as he knows more and more people in his country consider it a good day when they actually have something to eat, and this on top of the unbelievably callous response of claiming it was all a freebie. That's not the point, you stupid sonof*tch.

But I digress.

I expressed disbelief because such a program requires tremendous manpower, finances, time, money (which explain why it's sneaking by us as well, considering many can enrich themselves in the process, but again that's beside the point), and finally extreme doses of political will, and just plain will. The will to make it work that stems from the firm and final belief with zero doubt that the Utopian premise of a National Identification System will make things better for the common man, and doggedly pursue it despite the many obvious hurdles aside and especially those coming from those who oppose it, and who are even willing to take arms against it. The government cannot even feed our hungry, jail a guilty man, or even put up an MRT line between North Station and Welcome Rotonda within budget and schedule. What makes it think it can do something like this?

There are 14 details: name, home address, sex, photo, signature, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, names of parents, height, weight, fingerprints, distinguishing marks and tax identification number. Seems logical, but out of curiousity how did these details come about?

This is as much IT news as National news. In fact, it is a geek's dream. Any database person worth his salt will wanna know how they plan to do it - and might have opinions of their own. It'd be an interesting topic. Would there also be web-based component?

"In no case shall the collection or compilation of the other data in violation of a person's right to privacy shall be allowed or tolerated under this order,'' the President said in the EO. "Access to the national ID data bank will be restricted with all information classified as "strictly confidential'' to be released or modified only with the consent of the individual."

That's as open a challenge to hackers as I've ever heard.

What other countries are doing this and to what extent is their success/failure?

GMA has released the first salvo, and thus it remains for the opposition to start, well, opposing. Reading the statements per se, she makes a relatively good argument for herself, stating the need for "A unified ID system will facilitate private business, enhance the integrity and reliability of government issued ID cards in private transactions, and prevent violations of laws involving false names and identities,''. The average citizen, heck the average geek can actually be caught nodding one's head on reading that.

As such the opposition will need to come up with a clear concept of why this is unconstitutional. A layman's version if you will. Judging from the inq7 article (and this article alone mind you, so I may not be fully informed), there is only a general concept of invasion of privacy. In fact, there seems a higher priority given to the President's sneaking through legislature to get the Executive Order passed.

Sneaky and underhanded as it is, to me it is beside the point. As such the public will merely pooh-pooh that issue as yet another of gov't's many internal strifes. The bigger and more alarming issue is the loss of one's privacy, and in order to bring attention to that, light should be shed on among other things: a) what rights are we enjoying at the moment. b.) what do we stand to lose, and finally c.) what do we stand to lose in the light of what the Executive Order is applying. Not only is it important to know our rights are being invaded, but exactly how, stating clear examples the guy walking on the street would understand, is called for.

this is for migs..

okay okay.. ill start seriously thinking about wpress na alright?

geez

:)

so... Adobe Buys Macromedia..

to go up against big ol MS.

gabillion dollars involved.. something to do with PDF.. adobe reader and flash. I think freehand's probably gonna get canned in favor of illustrator, and golive might be discontinued in favor of dreamweaver (personally i still use the simpler homesite, from macromedia's earlier purchase of alaire).

but thing is, when o when is adobe going to come up with a lin version of photoshop?

there've been some adobe server linux versions now, so that means they're not totally looking away from open source. But the only thing keeping me from totally switching from w32 is Photoshop. Photoshop and works produced from such still bowls me over to this day. I see a cool t-shirt design, a movie poster, a sticker, and of course websites, and I automatically end up working out how I could do it in pshop. Can you say that about other programs? I mean, would you do somersaults looking at some guy's fantastic Word document, say?

Pshop no doubt is a distinct and essential part of me now. That may sound somewhat theatric, but I really believe that. Others will empathize.

so when when when's a lin version coming out?! kahit binary, ok lang, you dont have to release the source!! make a paid version, so we can find a pirated one in greenhills, starmall and MRT stations already! Never mind if all the computers in their office have been running on a very reliable 100mbits wired LAN for years.

For these discriminating people, i have accumulated tips designed to assist them in the pursuit of their.. rather unique.. goals. To wit:

Try to find a wall mounted router. If you can't, find one that'd look nice, and Mighty Bond some metal thingies that'd let you wall-mount it. This is important.

Place it at the most conspicious place possible in your office or living room. The beauty of this is, you can justify it. Ie:

Guest: wow what's this?
You: oh, that's my wifi router.
(pause to let it sink in, then with a pained expression, like you couldn't be bothered to explain, continue..). I put it there kasi its in the center.. allows for best reception.
Guest: ah ok! (which may or may not means he understands why you slapped a router right between a Malang and an Ang Kiukok).

God forbid you've only got Wifi B. Go to the mall this minute and get yourself a B/G. Make sure this is prominently placed on your device. It doesn't matter that you'll never need 54mbps, and that even 11mbps or even 1mbps is plenty fast for you. You do not need the stress of knowing that some guests will know the difference, and say, 'why B lang?'. Go!

Again, make sure your device has a large thumping sticker on it saying it's an (a.) wifi device and (b.) it's the latest wifi device. Who cares that we take great pains to hide ugly electronic devices and other modern marvels from sight. This is a wifi router, and you need people to see it.

If these still dont work for you, consider this. Get a wifi router, then buy several wireless application points, and nail them all over your house. Not only will you always have a signal wherever you go, every sucker's gonna want to know what that is, and you'll be enveloped in "hey pare you're such a geek!" heaven for the longest time possible. The beauty is, most WAPs can be wall-mounted. THe prob is, the most conspicious looking WAP i know (Linksys) isn't, but again, you can have someone Mighty Bond some metal wall-mount screwholes onto it, or have a carpenter make a platform for it on your wall. Remember, the more conspicious, the better.

Routers allow you to limit those using it through DHCP, filtering, or any number of ways. Whatever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THIS. Leave everything at default, and let everyone on your neighborhood detect your signal and surf to their hearts delight. Remember to name your SSID (Service Set Identifier) after yourself, your house, or anything that'd make it obvious it's yours. Remember, you want any notebook or wifi device-carrying dope within 500 meters of your gate to detect your signal. So that not only your neighbors, but (get this) even your neighbours guests will know.

The in-your-face value to that is just off the scale. So the guys next door have new BMW? So what? Your signal is permeating the air they breathe. Let's see them BEAT THAT.

dude pare were like, wifi nahh...

youd think by now after spending so many hours on the new PC, i'd have something else to talk about by now, such as being 'featured' on one of the magazines i write for (more on this later), but nooo..

new PC has to make a scene and the WD hard disk crashed just three days from getting bought. That's right. 3 days. That's a Western Digital 40gb 7200rpm drive (P2,750.00) for those who wanna know what brand/model to avoid (unfortunately i forgot to have it replaced with a Seagate or Maxtor one, figures). PCExpress changed it of course. I didn't say "fortunately" they did because this is SOP really.. so for all those ppl out there who haven't grasped the concept of returning broken things for replacement yet - this is for you: If it got broke due to no fault of your own (and its under warranty of course), go back from where you bought it and they'll change it. No drama, no need to make a scene. They'll change it, period.

Anyway, that was yest., and now its 10:01PM and ive reformatted, partitioned, installed, installed some more, and now im YMing with the chief of chiefs on a Wifi connection, using a pci wifi card and the 54mbps Level One router I traded for, discussed in previous posts. I gotta say, wifi can sound tackily pa-high-tech by now, but im still wrapping my head around the idea of surfing comftably in 11mbps (the pci card is only B) w/out a wire - a special feeling for a guy who's crawled through the tiniest, darkest, weirdest places just to cable PCs.

A final comment before I turn in as my eyes are halfway closed.. i've a habit of copying the contents of installation CDs onto dirs i create in a partition to make it easy for future installs, and install from these. this technique doesnt work for ECS mobos though.. for some strange reason when clicking, say, 'update driver' on the mobo-based LANcard, it'd auto-detect a driver other than what its supposed to, and install that. Naturally it wouldn't work well, in my case the wired LAN connection wildly dropped and connected every five seconds, forcing me to install a PCI lancard to connect to the net. You're gonna have to Autoplay the mobo cd and do it the SOP way, and let it do its thing. Dont even think of trying to skip that and autodetect the CD, not even if you point it towards the right OS directory. Like i said it'd install something else.

Finally, after discovering that, you'd wanna disable/uninstall that faulty driver right? Well guess what. Do that, click reinstall, and itd still install that faulty driver. I know what you're saying. Uninstall it again, and Autoplay the install CD, right? Nope, Windows will still isntall the wrong driver. I think nothing short of a registry hack will fix this. Gawd it's annoying - a throwback to old win95 driver issues.

Ok im off to bed now. Oh yeah about getting featured in a mag. ill talk abt that tom :). zzzz.

on complicating things

being exposed to the speed of the new PC, I naturally got envious and resolved to reformat/reinstall my own old PC to better be able to experience once again the performance of a freshly baked computer - a feeling I've not had since it's last reformat/reinstall many months ago.

reason why Ive delayed of course is because it just seems so... complicated.

motivated as such, i hunkered down and readied myself for the ordeal, which all but took - 3 hours. More or less, probably less. And with most of that time watching tv no less.

In other words, I was in a huff over nothing. I got on it around 6pm, occasionally getting up from the couch to press a button or insert a cd, and by 9 i was finished. By morning I put in the finishing touches, and by mid-morning I was working already. No prob.

And by afternoon the fact was sinking in. Wasn't able to get the MSI AP11b Wifi Access point yet. They had only 1 unit left and when we opened it to check, it was grimy, and when I pulled it out the box the antenna fell off. likely it was a showroom unit, but its definitely seen better days, causing staff to issue me one of the rarest events in my many years of buying PCs - a cash refund.

At any rate, it's the cheapest WAP out there, or at least in PCExpress's pricelist to date, others being the P4,500.00 Surecom EP-9600GP and the P3,850.00 Cnet CNAP-711. The MSI unit costs only P2,950.00, and I have instructed my sister to look for one at Gilmore as we speak.

Other points of note is the incredible drop in price of a quality CDR in the Lite-On 52/32/52 unit above. I remember distinctly saving up for a P5,000.00 or so 24x unit not too long ago. At P1,500.00, CDRs should be standard equipment by now (and likely, Nero Burning Rom as de facto burning software, as well as .nrg, Nero's proprietary disk image format), so I was surprised a bit when I compared PCExpress's bundled promo options and found some units without one, so these are likely extra inventory. They also dont stock 5400 rpm drives anymore, and at P2750 for 7200rpm 40gb that is a good deal.

i opted for a blue version of my Reflex 706 casing, which other than having tons of space for air to circulate around, and space for another fan (just comes with one), just plain darn looks good in my opinion. I also bought a black/silver monitor AOC monitor, actually a trade-off from buying what I really wanted, a 19" flat unit. If I didnt have to get the WAP I'd have gone for it and still stuck to the 25k ceiling, but as it is, no go.

And finally, the mobo/processor selection. Although ECS isn't a highly regarded brand, I took a risk on it 2 years ago and my unit is still going strong (knock on wood). Except for a few 'cannot find hard disk' issues which turned out to be defective ide cables, the thing is still ok. I could probably have done better than a Sempron 2200, but the closest Athlon at 2800mhz is P6,250.00, 2x the price. And as processors go, Id likely not find much difference in 2200 to 2800mhz, so I went cheap and again, stuck with the budget.

I've stuck to the philosophy of pouring on the RAM and Video Card, and 'scrimping' on the processor (and in this case, had to with the mobo as well). So far it's worked out for me, but the best affirmation of this was when the guy helping me select parts blurted out a "tama yan bossing buhos mo sa ram at vidcard, itong mga 'to (points at mobo/proc) pare pareho lang naman e". nuff said.

options for niece's PC

incoming UP freshman niece should have any of the below by end of weekend:

option A Php 26,340
Intel P4-2.26 Box 512kb 533mhz 6400
ECS 661FX-M7 Vagp8x/Sata/S/Lan 2750
512 MB PC266 DDR 2200
40 gig Western Digital 7200 2750
Inno3D FX5200 128ddr tv-out 8x 64bit 2600
Sony floppy 390
17" Boka 17NF 4350
Lite-On 52x/32/52 1450
Reflex725/ Casing w/supply & Kybrd 1750

option B Php 22,290
Sempron 2200+ Box w/ fan 3350
ECS 755A2L agp8x/S/Lan/sata/R 3450
512 MB PC266 DDR 2200
40 gig Western Digital 7200 2750
Inno3D FX5200 128ddr tv-out 8x 64bit 2600
Sony floppy 390
17" Boka 17NF 4350
Lite-On 52x/32/52 1450
Reflex725/ Casing w/supply & Kybrd 1750

option C Php 22,390
Intel Celeron 2.4D Box 4150
ECS 661FX-M7 Vagp8x/Sata/S/Lan 2750
512 MB PC266 DDR 2200
40 gig Western Digital 7200 2750
Inno3D FX5200 128ddr tv-out 8x 64bit 2600
Sony floppy 390
17" Boka 17NF 4350
Lite-On 52x/32/52 1450
Reflex725/ Casing w/supply & Kybrd 1750

the budget is 25k, which was supposed to be 30k except I think she opted to buy nike sneakers with the difference.
